Easily install modded games directly to your Xbox 360 hard drive
Hot-swapping sounds intense, but it’s actually a simple, repeatable method once you know what to look for.
With our tested discs, clear guides, and console-specific videos, you can get your mods installed and running in no time.

What Is the Hot-Swap Method? Hot-swapping is a quick way to install a modded version of a game onto an Xbox 360 hard drive. It works by starting the install process with a retail disc to pass the security check, then swapping it for a matching modded disc at the correct moment. Once installed, the game always launches the modded version from the hard drive with no extra steps.
CRITICAL TIMING: THE GOLDEN RULE
The most reliable approach is the “Pre-A-Button” method. You must swap the disc BEFORE pressing the A button to confirm the installation.
Once the modded disc is seated, press A to start the install.
DO NOT hot-swap after you have pressed the A button. Do not attempt a swap if the progress bar is at 0% or any other percentage. If the installation has already started, it is too late.
How Easy Is It? Hot-swapping can be broken down into four simple steps:
Before You Start (For All Consoles)
Choose Your Console Use the tabs/dropdowns for the correct method:
Each section includes: Recommended method, timing tips, alternative methods, and video guides.
Xbox 360 Phat – Hot-Swap Method
The Xbox 360 Phat uses a tray-loading DVD drive, making it one of the easiest consoles for hot-swapping.
Recommended Method
Insert the retail disc.
Go to Install Game on the dashboard.
When the disc spins up and the install prompt appears, do not press A yet.
Gently slow the disc (as shown in the video) and swap it with the matching modded disc.
Press A to begin the install.
The console installs the modded version while believing it’s the retail disc.
Why This Works Well
Very simple once seen.
Most reliable method for the Phat model.
Alternative Methods
Swap after pressing A (useful for certain drive behaviours).
Drive-specific timing tweaks (covered in the video).
Xbox 360 Slim – Hot-Swap Method
The Xbox 360 Slim also uses a tray-loading drive.
It works very similarly to the Phat model and is beginner-friendly with the right timing.
Recommended Method
Insert the retail disc.
Highlight the game and choose Install Game.
Wait for the disc to spin up and the install prompt to appear.
Before pressing A, follow the Slim timing shown in the video:
Gently slow the disc
Swap it with the matching modded disc
Press A to start the install.
Most Slim consoles respond almost identically to Phat models, making this method very reliable.
Alternative Methods
Adjusted swap timing for certain DVD drives (swap when the disc slows after its first spin).
Handling tips for more sensitive drives (shown in the video).
Xbox 360 E – Hot-Swap Method
The Xbox 360 E works very similarly to the Slim model, with only small differences in timing depending on the DVD drive inside.
It’s still easy to hot-swap once the basic steps are followed.
Recommended Method
Insert the retail disc.
Go to Install Game on the dashboard.
Wait for the disc to spin up and the install prompt to appear.
Before pressing A, perform the hot-swap:
Gently slow the disc
Swap it with the matching modded disc
Press A to begin the install.
Notes
Timing can vary slightly between different E-series DVD drives.
If the first attempt fails, adjusting the timing usually resolves it.
Alternative Methods
Modified swap timing for certain drive models.
